Dr. Steve Culver is the Associate Provost for Institutional Effectiveness at Virginia Tech. Dr. Culver has over 20 years of experience in academic assessment and evaluation. He holds the Ph.D. in Educational Research and Evaluation from Virginia Tech and has served as an evaluation consultant to such diverse organizations as the United States Department of Education, the Education Ministry of Finland, state departments of education, and community colleges Dr. Culver's recent work as an evaluator has included funded projects from the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He served as the advisory editor of the Handbook of research on assessment technologies, methods, and applications in higher education (2008) and as a manuscript reviewer for numerous journals in the field. Dr. Culver's published work in the last year includes "Educational quality, outcomes assessment, and policy change: The Virginia example" published in International Education; "Course grades, quality of student engagement, and students' overall evaluation of instructor" published in the International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education; "The National Survey of Student Engagement: A university-level analysis" published in Tertiary Education and Management; and "Understanding the relationship between gender and engagement: A multi-level investigation" published in Assessment and Evaluation in Higher Education.
